Rules for Courteous Golf
SPEED OF PLAY:
You can play quickly and have a relaxing game! The following
is a list of things that will help speed up play and make everyone a more courteous golfer. The
speed of play is always important in golf, but in the early spring and fall if
play is too slow everyone in your league will not finish their round.
-
KNOW THE BALL YOU ARE HITTING.
On the first tee, and every time you
start with a new ball, know the make and number of the ball. When 2 or
more balls land in the same general area, it is crucial to know what
you are hitting. There is a 2-stroke penalty if you hit another player's ball!
-
SEARCH FOR A LOST BALL NO MORE THAN 2 OR 3 MINUTES.
If you think the ball you have just hit may be lost, announce that you are hitting a
provisional ball. Keep in mind that the first
ball you hit is the one that must be played unless it is lost. An
additional stroke must be taken if you hit the provisional ball.
-
BE AWARE OF YOUR CART POSITION.
You should never have to walk backward to get your cart or clubs. If riding, work with your
cart partner to keep the cart moving forward.
-
BE COURTEOUS.
Don't talk when someone is hitting or putting.
-
PLAY "READY GOLF"
on the tee, on the green, and in between (unless hitting your ball puts you in a hazardous position).
Only the pros worry about who hits first, and we aren't pros!
-
HAVE YOUR CART PARTNER OR ANOTHER MEMBER WATCH YOUR BALL
when you hit, and vice versa. Line the ball up with something on the course to make it easier to
locate.
-
TAKE SEVERAL CLUBS WITH YOU
when you approach your ball so you don't have to return to the cart if
the lie or distance took different than what you originally thought.
-
CARRY A SECOND BALL
in your pocket in case you have to hit a provisional ball.
-
PLAN YOUR SHOT AND SELECT YOUR CLUB
as you approach your ball or while you wait for others to play.
-
CONSIDER PUTTING CONTINUOUSLY
until you hole out unless restricted by another player's line. Do not walk or stand in
another player's line at any time. As you approach the green, look to
see where everyone's ball lies.
-
MARK YOUR SCORE ON THE NEXT TEE,
not on the green or in your cart next to the green.
-
HONOR EWGA'S DOUBLE-PAR RULE 11
All players, no matter their skill level, have bad holes. Double par keeps the pace of play
moving for everyone. Pick up your ball after you have hit more than 2x the par on the hole. Mark
you score as double the par number and move on.
-
MULLIGANS.
Each league can decide if the first ball on the tee can be a mulligan. No mulligans after the
first tee shot to maintain pace of play.
